Mission & Vision
Each year, influenza affects between 5% and 15% of the global population and causes between 250,000 and 500,000 deaths, representing a major public health challenge on both national and international levels. Given the rapid spread of the virus, research in this field must be highly responsive and capable of integrating all available data, to enable the WHO to develop a vaccine adapted to the circulating strains each year.
In 2011, the Global Influenza Hospital Surveillance Network (GIHSN) was established, bringing together various health institutions and private foundations with the mission of addressing critical gaps in knowledge about the influenza virus.
In parallel, the Fondation pour l’Épidémiologie de la Grippe was created in 2015 under the aegis of Fondation de France to support epidemiological research on influenza and other respiratory viruses.
Actions Led
The foundation operates within the GIHSN framework to facilitate epidemiological research on influenza by standardizing data collected by more than 35 hospitals across the globe. This harmonized approach gives researchers access to a broader and more coherent dataset, enabling a deeper understanding of the disease and supporting the development of guidance for annual vaccination strategies.
