Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis

promotes arts and culture and preserves heritage at Villa Medici

Mission & Vision

Founded over 350 years ago, Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis is an artist residence, art center with a diverse programming and a place rich in cultural heritage, being in the Villa Medici, former home to the Cardinal Ferdinando de’ Medici and Roman emperors before that. The French Academy in Rome, situated at Villa Medici since 1803, has three complementary missions: residencies, programming, and heritage, all of which aim to preserve and promote artistic and literary creation

Actions Led

Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis acts alongside its three core missions:

  • Residencies: Each year, the academy welcomes over 70 artists, creators, and researchers in long-term or short-term residencies. Since its creation, more than 2,000 fellows or residents have taken residence, driving the academy’s founding mission of encouraging and creating art, which has expanded from painting, sculpture, and architecture to all artistic disciplines.
  • Programming: All year long, Académie de France à Rome – Villa Médicis organizes exhibitions, festivals, and events. One group show is dedicated each year to the works of the fellows in residence. Other exhibitions, available with guided tours, take the form of invitations to contemporary artists or temporary installations that interact with Villa de Medici’s heritage.
  • Heritage: Aligned with its mission to conserve, restore study, and showcase the rich heritage of the Villa Medici, the academy organizes various activities around the 7 hectares of buildings and gardens, and collection of over 5,000 works.
