Mission & Vision

The Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF) is an advocacy organization that provides support and legal assistance to individuals who disclose information in the public interest across the African continent. Primarily active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Senegal, and South Africa, PPLAAF assists whistleblowers before and after disclosure, engages in strategic litigation against wrongdoers when authorities fail to act, and promotes research and advocacy for preventative and protective measures. Ultimately, its mission is to strengthen the awareness and resilience of civil society, anti-corruption bodies, the media, NGOs, and citizens to safeguard democracy.

Actions Led

PPLAAF offers a range of services to whistleblowers, NGOs, media, and governments:

  • Secure communication channels for individuals wishing to report unlawful, illicit, or unethical actions they have witnessed, using a secure website and protected messaging platforms.
  • Legal assistance through a network of local and international lawyers who help whistleblowers safely disclose wrongdoing and protect them from retaliation, regardless of their financial means.
  • Media assistance, connecting whistleblowers with trusted journalists and media outlets across Africa to ensure the information is reported accurately while preserving the whistleblower’s anonymity.
  • Advocacy and research aimed at strengthening legal protections for whistleblowers by engaging with elected officials and policymakers, and by producing policy recommendations and research on whistleblowing standards and best practices.

PPLAAF has also launched a podcast series to raise awareness about the realities of whistleblowing in Africa and its vital role in promoting democratic accountability and protecting fundamental rights.
