Parcours d’Exil, a Paris-based health center and non-profit organization, provides comprehensive medico-psychological care to exiled people. Founded in 2002, its mission is to improve the physical and mental health of those who have experienced psychological trauma resulting from violence and persecution in their countries of origin and throughout their migration journeys.
The center provides multidisciplinary care combining medical, psychological, and osteopathic support, along with specialized individual and group therapies and therapeutic group activities.
Since September 2024, this work has also been carried out through a local branch in La Rochelle (in the Charente-Maritime department, in southwestern France).
Parcours dʼExil is also a leading professional training organization providing training for professionals, social workers, healthcare providers, and volunteers who support refugees, asylum seekers, and other displaced populations.
Through its care and training programs, Parcours d’Exil envisions a society where every person affected by exile, violence, and persecution has access to the care and support needed to recover from trauma and rebuild their life with dignity.
Parcours d’Exil supports approximately 500 patients each year, providing care that responds to the long-term consequences of exile, violence, and displacement.
Each patient’s care pathway is structured by a general practitioner, who conducts the initial assessment and coordinates care with the other professionals involved. Treatment follows the three phases commonly used in trauma recovery: stabilization, trauma-focused treatment, and integration.
At the heart of Parcours d’Exil’s work is an integrative approach to psychological trauma. This means combining evidence-based therapeutic methods and adapting them to each patient’s specific needs, history, and cultural background.
This integrative model is based on three core principles:
Multidisciplinary care: close coordination between the general practitioner, psychologists, and osteopaths. The general practitioner carries out the initial assessment and coordinates the overall care pathway. Each professional involved contributes their own expertise within a coherent therapeutic framework.
Multimodal care: a combination of talk therapies – including EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) – body-based therapies such as osteopathy, Somatic Experiencing, and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), as well as group-based interventions. This diversity of approaches makes it possible to tailor care to each patient, especially since some people respond more easily through the body than through words.
Transcultural adaptation: careful attention to cultural context in the delivery of care. Therapists are trained in transcultural issues and adapt their interventions to patients’ cultural understandings of illness, healing, and the body.
This approach allows Parcours d’Exil to deliver highly tailored, trauma-informed care to people whose needs are often complex, urgent, and deeply shaped by the experience of displacement.
The organization works closely with other non-profits, healthcare professionals, and institutional partners to ensure comprehensive support and strong local engagement.
