Mission & Vision
The Association Lapérouse in Albi, France, brings the remarkable 1785 Lapérouse expedition to life through a unique 75-minute immersive creation. Led by the French explorer Jean‑François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, the expedition was a major scientific and navigational journey around the world, combining exploration, diplomacy, and scientific discovery at a time when much of the globe remained unknown to Europeans.
This experience combines cutting-edge generative AI with an original symphonic score, allowing audiences to engage with history in a vivid and emotionally resonant way. By reimagining this legendary voyage, the project connects viewers with universal values of discovery, humanism, and the preservation of world heritage.
Looking to the future, the association seeks to leverage 21st-century innovation to share these ideals with a global audience, making the story of Lapérouse both accessible and inspiring. The project has received official endorsement as part of the French Navy’s 400th Anniversary celebrations, highlighting its cultural significance and ambition.
Actions Led
Led by the Lapérouse Albi-France Association (ALAF), the project focuses on three major creative pillars:
- Visual Production: Creation of a high-definition film using generative AI to reconstruct historical ports of call (Chile, Alaska, California, China, etc.) based on period logbooks and archival drawings.
- Musical Composition: Recording of an original 40-minute symphonic score composed by Olivier Gavignaud and performed by the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Laurent Petitgirard, Perpetual Secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
- Cultural Outreach: Organization of international cine-concerts and educational programs highlighting the humanistic, scientific, and naturalistic significance of the expedition.
Projects That U.S. Donors Can Support
Officially endorsed by the French Navy for its 400th anniversary, this project combines a cinematic visual reconstruction (utilizing cutting-edge AI tools for immersive storytelling) with an original symphonic composition. Support from U.S. donors will fund the recording of the soundtrack under the musical direction of Mr. Laurent Petitgirard, conductor, Perpetual Secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and artistic partner of the project. It will also help finalize audiovisual post-production and support the distribution of the work as film-concerts following the traces of the expedition. In addition to the artistic creation, a comprehensive set of educational resources will be offered to teachers to pass on the values of curiosity, science, and exploration.
Support from U.S. donors will contribute to the preservation of shared historical memory and the promotion of cultural education through modern technologies and artistic forms.
