Founded in Cachan, France, by African cinema fans, Afrique sur Bièvre is dedicated to empowering and increasing the visibility of African cinematographers on cinema screens, to local audiences of all ages, through a unifying cultural event. It was created in 2007 by a group of dedicated individuals seeking to address the underrepresentation of African cinema in France, despite its engagement with important issues across regions from the Maghreb to South Africa.
Each year, Afrique sur Bièvre organizes its annual film festival, Ciné Regards Africains, which features short films and movies from African filmmakers. The festival opens film screenings to all, drawing more than 700 attendees and roughly 1,000 students from elementary through high school. Each screening is followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, an actor, or a specialist in African cinema, creating a space for cultural exchange centered on African filmmaking. At the end of the festival, two prizes are awarded, one from the audience and one from the jury, recognizing the most outstanding films presented throughout the screenings.
