The University and University Hospitals of Strasbourg form a major hub of education, research, and healthcare in France’s Grand Est region. As one of the country’s oldest academic institutions, the University of Strasbourg is internationally recognized for its excellence in higher education and scientific innovation. Its university hospitals are among the largest and most advanced in France, offering state-of-the-art care while serving as a training ground for future healthcare professionals.

The University and University Hospitals of Strasbourg Foundation was established to strengthen this ecosystem by mobilizing philanthropic support for projects that serve the common good. Through the generosity of its donors, the Foundation works to support students, improve care for patients and their families, advance research and innovation, and preserve the university and hospitals’ cultural heritage.

With initiatives supporting the key projects both at the university and the hospitals, the foundation’s mission is to ensure both institutions thrive, creating lasting impact across education, healthcare, science, and culture.

A Historic University with an Innovative Spirit

Founded in 1538, the University of Strasbourg has long been a center of European intellectual life. Among its faculty, alumni, and researchers, the university has produced 18 Nobel laureates and two Fields Medalists, as well as many other recognized scholars in a wide range of fields.

Its academic offerings span a broad range of disciplines—from science and medicine to the humanities, law, and the arts. With more than 60,000 students and 2,600 researchers, it is one of the largest and most dynamic universities in France. The University of Strasbourg has over 400 partner institutions in Europe and 175 in the rest of the world, and offers 60 international dual degrees in partnership with universities around the world.

Strasbourg’s unique position at the crossroads of Europe fuels its academic culture and medical ingenuity. Nestled along the French-German border and home to institutions like the European Parliament, Strasbourg is a hub for international exchange. The University of Strasbourg is among the oldest in Europe and has long been a pioneer in medical education, and today, over 10,000 students are enrolled in health-related fields.

The close geographic and institutional ties between the University and the hospitals create a powerful model. “It allows knowledge to flow quickly: research improves medical practice, discoveries benefit patients sooner, and health students learn directly in the field,” notes Thomas Heckel, Director of the University and University Hospitals of Strasbourg Foundation.

“It’s a true team effort between education, research, and healthcare. This proximity allows researchers, teachers, students, and caregivers to collaborate on a daily basis, which strengthens both innovation and the quality of care.”

Key Foundational Initiatives: Supporting Students

The University and University Hospitals of Strasbourg Foundation is committed to advancing support for the entire hospital and university network. One of its top priorities is student solidarity. From emergency aid to administrative support, the Foundation ensures that every student—no matter their background—can thrive. “We believe that every student, wherever they come from, has a place and a role in this community,” says Heckel. “By supporting them, we bring to life the values of humanism, solidarity, and excellence.”

This commitment extends internationally. With 20% of students coming from abroad and partnerships in 75 countries, Strasbourg is truly global. The Foundation amplifies this by providing targeted support, including dedicated funds for students and researchers from conflict-affected regions.

One of the most powerful illustrations of the Foundation’s impact is its annual donor-scholar meet-up. “More than 80 people came together last time,” Heckel recalls. “What could have been a formal gathering became a warm and authentic moment of connection. In small groups, people shared stories—one student said her scholarship allowed her to continue her studies despite serious family difficulties.

A donor responded that he would have loved to receive such support as a student. This intergenerational dialogue is much more than a simple exchange: what we remember most are the looks exchanged, the smiles shared, and the conviction that even a simple gesture can have a concrete impact.”

Fueling Research

Philanthropic giving also drives research innovation. Strasbourg is a recognized leader in science, and the Foundation helps sustain that momentum. Recent initiatives include a research chair on Water and Sustainability, developed in collaboration with labs and companies across the Upper Rhine region. “The aim is to develop concrete solutions to environmental challenges, in connection with the ecological transition,” says Heckel.

The Foundation also supports high-level studies, including new therapeutic approaches to rare cancers and urological conditions. It is also backing the launch of a new economics chair, “Demain, quel(s) capitalisme(s) ?” designed to rethink Western economic models for a more equitable future.

Driving Advancements in Hospital Care

Beyond research, the Foundation is deeply invested in improving hospital experiences, both for patients and for those who care for them. At the Hautepierre hospital, an MRI simulator helps children face intimidating medical exams with reduced stress and fewer anesthesia requirements. Specialized neonatal care rooms, developed under the NIDCAP program, create calmer environments for premature infants and their families.

For healthcare professionals, the Foundation funds dedicated rest and wellness spaces, such as “La Bulle,” which offers yoga, relaxation, and osteopathy sessions. “It helps caregivers cope with their often intense daily lives,” says Heckel.

Growing French-American Partnership

The Foundation is committed to deepening its international reach, especially across the Atlantic. Strasbourg has strong historical ties to the United States, including a large Alsatian diaspora with many alumni living abroad. According to Heckel, “It’s essential to remind our community abroad that they can support our work if they wish. That’s why we partnered with Friends of Fondation de France: to make tax-deductible giving easy for U.S.-based donors.”

American institutions have already played a part in Strasbourg’s research excellence. One example includes the work of Professor Thomas Baumert, supported by the Foundation, who leads liver cancer research projects in close collaboration with Harvard Medical School, Stanford University, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Looking to the future, the Foundation’s vision is clear: a stronger, more connected, and more equitable university-hospital system. “We see every day how our actions can make a difference, in very concrete ways, for patients, students, carers, researchers, and people living in our region,” says Heckel. “

As patients, we all want to be well taken care of when we encounter health problems. As students, we want quality training. As business leaders, we want to be able to recruit talent. We all stand to gain from having an excellent university and an excellent hospital.”

Upcoming opportunities include developing next-generation medical training, expanding access to higher education, supporting urgent scientific research, and preserving Strasbourg’s extraordinary heritage.
