Institut Professeur Baulieu

to fund scientific and medical research on the factors that cause or accelerate nervous system disorders, and ultimately to develop effective treatments.

Mission & Vision

Institut Professeur Baulieu was founded in 2008 to better understand, prevent, and cure neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. More specifically, Prof. Baulieu (1926-2025) created this institute to explore a new research path, based on the interaction between the immunophilin protein FKBP52, which he discovered, and Tau, a protein responsible for many neurodegenerative diseases. The mission of the institute is therefore to fund scientific and medical research that will help identify and correct the factors that cause or accelerate nervous system disorders, and ultimately to develop effective treatments

Actions Led

The institute’s research is structured around two main areas: the role of amyloid plaques and the dysfunction of the Tau protein. It also focuses on the FKBP52 protein, which has been identified as playing a protective role in preventing neuronal death. Researchers are working on establishing biomarkers to assess FKBP52 levels. If those levels are found to be insufficient, the individual may be at risk for developing a neurodegenerative disease. In such cases, it would be necessary to stimulate or replicate the function of this protein. Therefore, the ultimate goal of the institute is to develop a drug capable of mimicking FKBP52 without causing any side effects.

Projects That U.S. Donors Can Support

By donating to Institut Professeur Baulieu, you can support a scientific research project that aims to test laboratory-made drug candidates on their ability to slow down a pathological process linked to the abnormal accumulation of Tau in diseased cultured neurons (taupathies such as Alzheimer’s disease). The donations will mostly be allocated towards equipment and consumable supplies.
