Hirondelle de l’Avenir France

Expanding access to education, healthcare, and professional opportunities to empower children and young people across Benin.

Mission & Vision

For nearly 20 years, Hirondelle de l’Avenir has been committed to reaching vulnerable children and youth in underserved and remote areas, particularly in Benin, where access to opportunity is often most limited. By investing in education, training, health, basic needs, and economic and professional empowerment, the organization helps create the conditions for both personal growth and long-term community development.

Its core belief: every child should have the chance to fulfill their potential and play an active role in shaping their own future.

Its vision: every person, regardless of background, can find their place, develop their abilities, and contribute meaningfully to their community.

Hirondelle de l’Avenir places particular emphasis on supporting girls and young women, with a focus on expanding their access to education to reduce gender inequalities and empower them to become role models in their communities.

Actions Led

Today, the organization operates in 9 of the country’s 12 departments across the north (Parakou, Djougou, Tourou, and Natitingou) and south (Aguégués, Porto Novo, Sakété, Allada, Azowlissé, and Houéyogbé), reaching thousands of beneficiaries each year through long-term, community-based initiatives.

Hirondelle de l’Avenir advances its mission of education, opportunity, and community development through five core programs that address the interconnected challenges facing children and families across Benin.

Child sponsorship program: At the heart of Hirondelle de l’Avenir’s work is its child sponsorship program, which provides vulnerable children with the resources they need to thrive in school and beyond. Sponsorship supports access to education, school supplies, healthcare, and other essential needs, while easing the financial burden on families. More than 600 children are currently sponsored, and over 2,000 have benefited from the program since its creation. Beyond financial support, the program fosters meaningful relationships between children and their sponsors, offering encouragement, stability, and hope throughout each child’s educational journey. Donors can sponsor a child starting at $20 per month, with transformational benefits for their wellbeing and future.

Scholarships for higher education (Bourse des hirondelles)In Benin, access to quality education remains a challenge, while girls continue to face disproportionate barriers, with only half of school-aged girls able to pursue studies. To help young people build brighter futures, Hirondelle de l’Avenir provides scholarships that cover the costs of vocational training and higher education. These scholarships help talented students, particularly young women, pursue professional qualifications that increase their long-term employment opportunities and economic independence.

Digital skills training: Through its coding school in Porto-Novo, Hirondelle de l’Avenir prepares children and young people for an increasingly digital world. Beginning at age seven, participants receive free instruction in coding and digital literacy, with more than 448 hours of training provided each year, and currently supports 35 regularly attending students. By building technical skills and digital confidence, the program helps expand future educational and career opportunities.

Food security through micro-gardening: Working with schools and orphanages, Hirondelle de l’Avenir develops micro-gardens that improve access to nutritious food while teaching sustainable agricultural practices and environmental stewardship. The organization also distributes school and food kits to approximately 1,650 children each year, helping families meet immediate needs while strengthening long-term food resilience.

Access to safe water: Access to clean water remains essential to improving health, education, and quality of life. Hirondelle de l’Avenir has constructed around 30 wells in underserved communities, providing reliable access to safe drinking water, improving hygiene conditions, and reducing the time families, and particularly women and children, spend collecting water each day.

In addition to its programs supporting young people and families in Benin, Hirondelle de l’Avenir is committed to sustainable community developmentoffering participatory and responsible travel experiences that allow visitors to directly support its programs and see their impact firsthand, while also discovering Benin’s culture and landscapes and strengthening the local economy.
