Today, schizophrenia, recurrent depression, suicidal behaviors, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorders are deeply disabling for patients and their families, and they represent a significant burden on society.
Fondation FondaMental is dedicated to combating mental illness by integrating cutting-edge healthcare with innovative research. It promotes an individualized, multidisciplinary approach to treating severe psychiatric disorders.
One in three people will experience a mental disorder at some point in their lives. Yet these conditions are not a life sentence—thanks to ongoing scientific progress, we now have a better understanding of how to treat and even prevent them. By advancing research in this field, Fondation FondaMental aims to help more people recover and to prevent certain disorders from progressing to the point of becoming a lasting disability.
The foundation is guided by four core missions:
Founded in 2007 with the initial goal of improving diagnosis by creating and coordinating a national network of expert centers, Fondation FondaMental has since expanded its mission to support research and innovation in psychiatry, with a focus on treating severe mental disorders. Today, the foundation also works to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness by sharing scientific knowledge and launching a variety of educational initiatives.
Fondation FondaMental embraces an interdisciplinary approach to mental health, bringing together more than 100 hospital teams and research laboratories across France that collaborate to advance both medical care and scientific understanding. Patients, their families, and the organizations that represent them are also key partners in the foundation’s work—placing collaboration at the very heart of its mission.
