Founded in 2018, Fondation Abeona is driven by the transformative power of artificial intelligence in building a sustainable, fair, and inclusive society. In a world facing critical challenges—from the climate emergency to deepening social inequalities—the foundation recognizes AI’s immense potential to address these pressing issues. However, this potential can only be realized if AI is developed with humanity’s best interests at its core.
As concerns grow globally about the risks posed by AI, the foundation champions a human-centered approach that promotes transparency, equity, and empowerment. Its mission extends to guiding citizens, businesses, and decision-makers toward making ethical, informed choices in our increasingly digital world.
Fondation Abeona is at the forefront of groundbreaking initiatives, working to ensure that artificial intelligence serves the greater good. The foundation’s efforts span across multiple areas, always focused on steering AI development toward a future based on justice, sustainability, and ethical considerations.
Collaborative Research and Ethical AI Development: Fondation Abeona partners with leading research institutions, think tanks, and businesses to tackle AI’s ethical challenges and societal impacts. Their work addresses topics like algorithmic bias by researching how biases manifest in AI and machine learning systems and contributing to the development of fairer, more transparent technologies. In healthcare, the foundation collaborates with experts to enhance the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases through machine learning techniques focused on brain imaging. In every project, the foundation prioritizes social and environmental justice, ensuring that AI contributes to a more equitable society by addressing the broader societal implications of these technologies.
Promoting AI Literacy: Fondation Abeona is dedicated to ensuring everyone has reliable knowledge about AI to make informed, responsible decisions regarding its use. After training hundreds of thousands of individuals in France, the foundation has launched a free, five-hour online course in collaboration with Institut Montaigne and OpenClassrooms called “Destination AI.” Available in both French and English, the course enables all individuals to grasp the fundamentals of AI, understand how it works, and recognize the challenges and opportunities it presents.
AI and Society Institute: In line with its mission, Fondation Abeona co-founded the AI and Society Institute, a multidisciplinary hub dedicated to exploring the societal impacts of AI. The institute’s research focuses on four key areas: AI and social justice, the future of work, AI robustness and security, and the role of generative AI in shaping language, images, and disinformation. By bringing together experts from academia, technology, civil society, and business, the institute aims to shape the ethical development of AI through research, public engagement, and advocacy.
Through these initiatives, Fondation Abeona ensures that AI remains a force for good, addressing its ethical and societal challenges while fostering a sustainable and just future.
US donors have the opportunity to support the AI and Society Institute, a cutting-edge initiative co-founded by Fondation Abeona, École normale supérieure-PSL, and Université Dauphine-PSL. This institute is dedicated to the responsible development of AI, focusing on its societal impacts and fostering responsible innovation.
By contributing to these efforts, US donors can help shape the future of AI, ensuring its development benefits everyone.
