Established in 1972, the Association du Festival d’Automne à Paris has been dedicated to supporting contemporary arts in various disciplines. From theater to music, dance, visual arts, and performances, the festival has been a key player in bringing light to international artists from all over the world. Secretary of State for Culture Michel Guy founded the festival intending to address the gap in the art scene in the 1970s and promote non-European forms of art and international cultures. Today, the festival is organized around three main missions: premiering artworks, taking risks, and supporting artists by connecting them with diverse audiences.
Each year, from September to December, the festival gathers about 250,000 people through more than 50 events in 60 cultural venues across Paris and the Ile-de-France region, such as the Centre Pompidou, the Louvre Museum, the Opéra de Paris, etc. The diversity of venues and the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art make the festival a hub of artistic exchange, offering a wide range of audiences the opportunity to discover international artists. Through its artistic and cultural education programs, the festival has allowed students to engage directly with artists about their work, sparking conversations around contemporary arts and opening new paths for dialogue among individuals who might not otherwise have connected. Since its first edition, this commitment to fostering exchange has been reflected in the festival’s programming, which has highlighted a range of American artists, including Robert Wilson, Merce Cunningham, and Lucinda Childs.
