Since its opening in 1996, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) has been France’s leading institution dedicated to photography in all its forms. The MEP showcases the major figures of the medium as well as emerging talents, illustrating the diversity of artistic approaches that characterise contemporary photography.
Housing an exceptional collection of 24,000 photographs and videos by artists since the 1950s, as well as one of the largest specialized libraries in Europe, the MEP is a unique place in Paris where photography engages in a dialogue with other disciplines such as the visual arts, film, fashion, literature and performance art.
Much more than a museum, the MEP is a living space, accessible to all and committed to showcasing diverse perspectives, both in the subjects it explores and the artists it represents. With its bold programming, unique heritage and emphasis on innovative creative approaches, the MEP is a place where photography never ceases to evolve and fascinate.
Founded in 1978 by Jean-Luc Monterosso, Henry Chapier, Marcel Landowski and Francis Balagna, the association ‘Paris Audiovisuel’, later renamed the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), was created to promote French and international artists during the biennial Mois de la Photo festival. Today, the MEP has grown into a true home for photography, open to all. Every year, a wide range of French and international visitors pass through its doors, from amateurs to enthusiasts, from young people to experts.
The MEP offers:
A historic center for photography in Paris, the MEP is an institution with its roots in the present and its eyes firmly set on the future. Its ambitious and innovative approach looks at photography in the light of its recent history and developments, while also focusing on the most contemporary works that will continue to fascinate tomorrow’s audiences.
U.S.-based donors can make tax-deductible donations to the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, supporting several key areas of the MEP’s work:
Artistic Programming: Supporting the production and presentation of ambitious exhibitions featuring both established and emerging artists to help foster innovation and diversity in contemporary photography.
Collection Enrichment: Enabling the acquisition of new photographic and video works to enhance a collection that currently comprises over 24,000 pieces, thereby ensuring its continued relevance and dynamism.
Educational Initiatives: Strengthening the MEP’s commitment to image literacy and inclusion by offering programmes tailored to a wide audience, particularly young people, underserved groups and individuals with limited access to cultural institutions.
