La Maison Goxa Leku

A welcoming space providing holistic support for people affected by cancer and their loved ones.
Cause(s): Human Services

Mission & Vision

Opened in September 2022, La Maison Goxa Leku was created in response to a simple observation: while medicine continues to advance, people living with cancer, along with those who care for them, are too often left to navigate the physical, emotional, social, and professional consequences of the disease alone.

In the heart of the Basque Country, La Maison Goxa Leku offers a welcoming space where people affected by cancer can receive holistic support, rebuild daily well-being, and stay connected throughout their care journey. Through personalized, multidisciplinary support, the organization helps improve the quality of life of people affected by cancer and their loved ones, from the time of diagnosis through one year after the completion of active treatment.

Support is available for a nominal annual membership fee of €30, providing access to extensive free support while ensuring the program remains accessible to all those who need it. Each participant benefits from a personalized, multidisciplinary support plan developed in collaboration with a dedicated care coordinator.

In fewer than four years, La Maison Goxa Leku has supported more than 530 beneficiaries, with 96% reporting an improvement in their quality of life.

Actions Led

Across its two locations, La Maison Goxa Leku offers more than 230 individual and group workshops each month, providing holistic support that extends beyond clinical cancer treatment. By supporting patients and loved ones together, the organization helps strengthen resilience while reducing isolation and improving overall well-being.

Every participant follows a personalized pathway that combines individual consultations and group activities centered around four pillars: physical activity, emotional well-being, social support, and psychological care.

Programs include:

  • Supportive care: adapted physical activity, psychological counseling, nutrition guidance, relaxation and wellness workshops, social support, and cognitive rehabilitation.
  • Caregiver support: dedicated workshops, peer support, and practical resources designed specifically for family members and loved ones.
  • Employment and professional reintegration:support for people affected by cancer in their professional lives, or who are returning to work, particularly through the Employment & Cancer program. Recognizing the need for greater awareness and preparation in the workplace, La Maison Goxa Leku also partners with companies and employers, equipping them with training and concrete tools to better support employees affected by cancer.
  • Strong local presence: services delivered at both the main center in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle and the satellite location in Hasparren, expanding access to supportive care in rural communities where these services are often unavailable.

All of these initiatives are carried out in close collaboration with local healthcare authorities to ensure that the support provided is consistent with the participants’ care pathways. To ensure the highest standards of its programs, La Maison Goxa Leku is guided by an independent Scientific Committee composed of healthcare professionals. The committee provides expert guidance on the organization’s strategic development, validates program facilitators, and helps ensure the quality and consistency of care delivered to every participant.
